Cob in the Community

Cob in the Community
building communities naturally

Things that we are proud of:

  • Being part of an eco build which saw over 100 willing volunteers - some so dedicated that they kept coming and working outside till mid December
  • Thank you cards from the local school children to say that their earth project was the best thing their school had ever done
  • Working with a youth offender officer on one project who said, "we have never seen them with such smiling faces at the end of the day. What ever you did with the mud, they really enjoyed it and felt really valued"
  • Jane aged 7 - saying "I understand about volume"  (as in mass not loud music)
  • Linda's potato harvest

About Us:

We are a community interest group of natural builders who create community buildings using local hands and local materials.

Our Vision

  • to be building two to three community structures in London per annum
  • to work with teaching professionals / youth apprenticeship schemes alongside leading crafts and natural builders
  • to build a network and tap into an existing international network of volunteers
  • to build or retro fit a range of structures with different community uses (teaching spaces, student union, crèche, retirement home, health support centre e.g hospital extension or hospice, arts and music and centres of well being
  • to develop a training programme that integrates the process of natural building with educational and social objectives of key targeted groups
  • to build skills of local people, increase engagement and cohesion and promotion of low impact building and the environment

Working With Community

  • community groups who may be in need of a cost-effective building (or of an additional structure) or who feel that the introduction of an environmentally conscious building project will benefit their community
  • local authorities and funders (with a focus on health, education, community, welfare, or the urban environment) who feel that the introduction of environmentally conscious building projects will benefit the environment, training opportunities, job opportunities, health and well being of their citizens, and who work to contribute to a statutory remit and / or moral obligation in this regard
  • private individuals wanting something different – a creative and healthy building

Community Builders

  • local volunteers wanting to build something for their own use and benefit
  • local or national volunteers wanting to acquire new skills and training
  • local or national volunteers wanting to give something back, to be active, to work with others and to create a tangible product in exchange for their time
  • specialist, professional and natural builders

Our Approach

CIC has big aspirations but we always work on a small scale.  We have already identified around 300 potential funders for our projects.

Because we have minimal overheads (a yurt as HQ) and a team employed on a project by project basis, we can respond to the demands of the market for building projects, thus limiting the ongoing running costs.

We bring in the expertise to ensure that projects are compliant with all planning and building regulations and reduce material, machinery and labour costs.
